A nation for Orelha
The brutal death of a street dog has shocked Brazil.
Brazil, the land of white sandy beaches, is experiencing a wave of anger and indignation. A beloved street dog has fallen victim to animal abuse. The alleged perpetrators: a group of youths.

For ten years, Orelha lived peacefully on the streets of Praia Brava. The beach district is located near the city of Florianópolis on the island of Santa Catarina in Brazil. The residents loved the dark brown mixed-breed dog, somewhere between a Labrador and a German Shepherd, for his peaceful nature and cared for him as part of their community.
Nearby Florianópolis is considered one of the safest and most livable cities in Brazil and ranks third in the prosperity index. It is a center for tourism and technology and home to several top universities. The city is also a UNESCO City of Creative Gastronomy and famous for its seafood, especially oysters. Praia Brava is one of its most famous beaches.
In this illustrious setting, Orelha suffers unimaginable pain on the night of January 4, 2026, when he encounters a group of teenagers. They lure the good-natured dog to them, pretending to want to play with him, perhaps even offering him a treat. When the dog approaches, they allegedly grab him and beat him. The next morning, a man finds Orelha under a parked car—still alive, but whimpering in pain. As the veterinarian later determines, his jaw and several ribs are broken, and his brain is protruding from an open wound in his skull. “They had driven nails into his head for fun,” wrote one user on Facebook. “He had lost an eye, and they had inserted a stick through his anus that pierced him, tearing his internal organs up to his throat. Throughout the entire ordeal, they enjoyed watching the pain and hearing Orelha’s cries of extreme suffering.”
This is certain because one of the youths filmed the incident with his smartphone and streamed it live on the American platform Discord, showing Orelha being tortured in front of viewers. Outraged animal rights activists are now appealing to US lawmakers in several petitions to hold Discord accountable and ensure that such atrocities are not broadcast in the future. The initiators refer to the federal law “Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture” (PACT), which prohibits participation in and promotion of animal cruelty. By allowing the live broadcast, Discord directly violated this law.
The police viewed a total of around 1,000 hours of surveillance footage and interviewed more than 20 witnesses. This enabled them to identify the alleged perpetrators. They are at least four young people aged between 12 and 17. The names and photos of five of them are circulating online. Two brothers are said to have fled to guest families in Orlando, Florida. On Facebook, there are reports of selfies that the two posted from Disney World – laughing heartily. Anger towards them is raging on social media. In Santa Catarina, where the crime was committed, a bill has been introduced, the “Lei Orelha”, which calls for higher penalties for animal cruelty. The case has also raised public awareness of the need to protect stray dogs – especially caramel-colored “Caramelo” dogs, which are considered a cultural symbol in Brazil. According to witness statements, on the night of Orelha’s ordeal, the accused youths had previously attempted to drown Orelha’s street companion, a “Caramelo.”
Thousands of people demonstrated in cities such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Belo Horizonte for “Justiça por Orelha” (Justice for Orelha). Some travel agencies launched boycotts of hotels allegedly owned by the suspects’ families. The public prosecutor’s office requested the provisional detention of the main suspect and accused three adult relatives of influencing witnesses and concealing evidence. They are also alleged to have attempted to bribe authorities.
The tragedy of Orelha brings the increasing violence against animals in Brazil back into focus. According to media reports, the number of reported cases of animal abuse has risen by around 1400 percent in the last four years. At the same time, the case shows that wealthy families still take the liberty of exerting influence on the authorities. Traditionally, privileged classes have a high chance of getting away with it. In Orelha’s case, this failed – at least in terms of effectively preventing the investigation. Shortly after the killing of the stray dog, the police reported a “digital inquisition” and attempts to intimidate witnesses, which increased the pressure on the investigating authorities. The massive reactions triggered by Orelha’s death certainly contributed to this.
The waves of outrage and disgust at the crime have now spread far beyond Brazil’s borders to other continents. On March 6, 2026, animal rights activists protested in front of the Brazilian Embassy in London, holding burning candles and posters demanding justice for the abused animal.

Social mobilization at the national and international level has also set things in motion in Brazil. In February 2026, Orelha’s body was exhumed from its grave. The judiciary had previously ordered a new autopsy of the animal because the initial forensic examination had revealed gaps. The Florianópolis City Council has submitted a motion supporting the transfer of the Orelha case to the federal authorities. This is no guarantee, but this declaration of political support calls on the Attorney General’s Office to review the case.
Animal rights activists are determined to continue fighting.

This is sickening, psychopathic behavior.
Of interest - I just got back from Egypt and most dogs there are street dogs and get vaccinated by the government and are fed daily by locals. The locals don’t have room in their apartments for a dog.
